Evaluation question 7
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?
When looking back on our preliminary task we believe that our camera work and editing techniques have improved throughout the whole course. For our preliminary task, we were asked to produce and edit a short film that included match on action, the 180 degree rule and a shot reverse shot. We successfully completed this task however there were some faults in our clip including slightly wonky framing work and lighting.
As you can see from the image on the right of our preliminary task, the frame is wonky, this is due to us not checking whether the camera was directly straight when attached to the tripod. We learnt from this and in our opening sequence, continuously checked if the framing was straight. Below is an example of this, it is a wide shot of on of our characters on a swing here we made sure that our framing was completely straight.
This is a wide shot, which appears in our opening sequence. It doesn't quite show the characters features clearly creating a mysterious feel, to help form a sense of fear towards the audience. The lighting is dark, with a single light shining on the character, this helps to contrast with the dark environment and emphasise her ghostly appearance.
As shown in this image to the right, in the next cut in out preliminary task the camera was positioned in an opposite direction to the source of light, making the scene darker and creating an unclear image. The contrast between these lightings made the short clip appear very un-proffesional and made our shot reverse shot slightly un-effective. We therefore became aware of this problem in our real opening sequence.
This was an important aspect to remember when filming our opening sequence and we therefore tried to keep our lighting consistent and maintained the similar lighting throughout. In our opening sequence we used quite dim lighting throughout to show it is shot at night time as he wakes up and to continue with our scary horror atmosphere. To show facial features we used spot lights.
Overall, we believe that we have learnt alot about camera work and editing in progression from our preliminary task to our full product. We have used various different camera shots, e.g match on action, panning, close-ups. We also became more advanced in terms of editing, such as graphical transitions and stylising clips to suit our horror genre.

Evaluation question 4
Who would be the audience for your media product?
Our target audience ranges from teenagers aged 15 to young adults of 25 as people over the age of 25 we feel may get a bit bored of the horror genre and teenagers are known for being daring and curious. From our own research we found that most horror films have a target audience of 15-25 as well as ours. We feel a popular young thing to do is hang out with a large group of friends and go to the cinema to watch a horror movie such as ours, which is a main reason why it is aimed at the younger generation in comparison to elderly. Our target audience consists of both male and female, from our previous research we found that males typically prefer a thriller as they seek the thrill and action more than women, however research shows that women viewings of horror films have exceeded mens for the very first time, women at 58% and men at 42%. This is the reason we have aimed our film at both genders. Our film will be rated 15, as the horror involved in this film could become inappropriate for anyone under this age. Our film also holds relatable characters to this age range, for example the character of Jason who is a good looking young adult, will appeal to girls around the same age.

Evaluation question 2
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
There are many existing horror films which involve a young girl being the scary character in the movie. Our own opening sequence also has a main character of a young girl similar to these films, For example, the character of the 9 year old girl Esther, in the film 'Orphan' released in 2009. her character is mysterious and haunting, like our own character Kayleigh, however Esther is slightly younger. Another film which holds a similar character to ours is 'Case 39', the little girl named Lillith, who appears innocent to the audience at first, however becomes a huge threat to her social worker. Her character is very haunting with a similar appearance to the the main character in our opening sequence. However, in case 39 the audience becomes gradually fearful of Lilliths character, due to her dark side being revealed later on in the film. Whereas our character Kayleigh is almost immediately shown to be the spooky character in our film.
A final and most obvious example of a similar existing character is the main character in the film 'The grudge', this is a 2004 american horror film. The girl in this movie is portrays the horror genre, however does not hold any dialogue, similar to our own character Kayleigh. Both characters are not actually living, but a haunting vision created in others minds. Their appearances are very similar- both wear a white robe and have long dark hair covering most of their facial features. They both look lifeless, due to the dark eye makeup and pale faces. They also have very similar roles in their films, they appear only to haunt others which play in the movie. However our character Kayleigh differs from the grudge as she is once shown as a real character, the daughter of Jason, whereas the grudge appears due to a supernatural curse.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Our opening sequence portrays, develops and challenges the forms and conventions of real media products through including key features usually found in a real opening sequence. We feel that the main purpose of an opening sequence is to capture the audiences attention, and appeal to the correct target audience. We have successfully accomplished this, through relating it to our horror theme by using flashing images, dark colors and creepy sounds. In an opening sequence you normally find features such as the Production company logo to begin, followed by the title introducing the audience to the name of the film. We included both these aspects in our own opening sequence because this tells the audience the title of our film ‘Awaken’ and our production company logo ‘Twined studios’. We produced both using ‘Motion’ app, which is designed to create titling for film and video production, it allowed us to choose from a variety of fonts and graphics best suited to our film genre, e.g. the main color scheme of Red and black, due to this representing danger as seen in real media products e.g. Red letter studios (a company that specialises in horror movies). Another important feature normally seen in real media products is the introduction of Actors/actresses, directors etc. to give credit to people responsible for producing the film. This is done through presenting their names on screen. We included our actors/actresses, directors and editors names in our opening sequence, again through using ‘Motion’ app. Sound became an important aspect in our opening sequence, as we feel it helped to create the tension needed to portray our horror genre. In many real horror films, you will find dark, distressing sounds such as drones and disturbing lullabyes, which we have included in our final opening sequence.
Here is an example of the type of costume we used in our opening film sequence to portray the horror genre. Our actor who plays the haunting young girl in our clip wears a white robe and dark scary makeup to emphasise her creepy character. It helps to suggest that this film will be based on horror, and creates a spooky feel for the audience. This character remains in this costume throughout the whole film, creating a signature look for the main character.
Here is an example of how our characters are introduced to the audience. We created this using Motion, and used the same font as the film title. It appears in between clips that show the characters to help the audience identify which actors are playing what part. We also used this style to present the directors and editors of the film, again using the same font to keep a consistent style throughout the sequence.

WWW and EBI
We are pleased with our final film production, and have learnt a lot about editing and filming throughout the procedure. One of our favourite stages of making our opening sequence was editing the clips, here we feel we learnt lots of new skills such as, graphical effects, sounds, blading, cutting and adding transitions to make the film run smoothly. We believe that this aspect of our film went very well, as the types of effects we used related closely to our genre and helped create a sense of fear and tension for the audience. For example, the flashing graphical effects helped the audience identify that the section of the sequence was only a fragment of Jasons memory. When it came to the actual filming, we feel we were able locate good areas to create a horror background,, we feel this really added to the scary feel to our opening sequence.
Our camera work showed a variety of shots and techniques, including panning shots, wide shots, closeups, handheld movements etc. As well as research on camera shots and movement, we looked back on our previous work we had completed in lessons which tell us how to use these shots effectively. We believe that our panning movement went very well as it was smooth, straight and at a consistent pace.
However when it came to the filming at lottie's house we accidently deleted a few of our essential clips off the camera and were unable to re film it. This meant careful editing was used to try and make it look as natural as possible. We did this by breaking up some of the scenes with the names of editors, directors and actors/actresses. The other thing we could have improved on is the length of our opening sequence. It is slightly short at 1 minute and 19 seconds, which is also due to the issue of accidental deleted clips. We could have therefore filmed more scenes in order to make the sequence slightly longer.

Sound
The sound in our opening sequence helps to create and build tension throughout the clip, due to the effect of layering our sounds. We used Final cut pro sound effects which included:
We also imported sounds of our own choice- we had the insidious theme tune running underneath our range of sound effects, it included scary sound effects and high pitched strings. This music was part of our influences, however we decided that it would fit really well with the rest of our sound and therefore included it in our opening sequence.
During the flash back, our sounds are very layered and loud creating a sense of tension and fear for the audience. On the second half of our opening sequence when jason wakes up we used subtle city sounds such as traffic and other ambient sounds to emphasis the fact that he has woken up to reality.
When the character of Kayleigh appears in the sequence, we use a range of 'Impact hit reverbs' to shock the audience and create a sense of fear, making it obvious that this character is the haunting one in the film. We believe that sound is a very important aspect in the production of a film, we therefore aimed to use it effectively in order to create a sense of fear, relating to our horror genre.

Costume and props
Our use of costume/props was a main feature in producing our opening sequence as it helped give a first impression of our characters and emphasise our focus on horror.
First of all our costume for our main character Kayleigh is a long white night gown with dark black make up round her eyes and pale white face make up. this gives a deathly look and shows the audience that she is lifeless and is present in order to haunt jason. We got our inspiration of Kayleigh's costume and makeup from a character played in 'the Grudge' who plays a similar role, she also wears a long white dress and has similar deathly makeup.
We used various props in our opening sequence to help emphasise our horror genre. One of our most significant props is a bed side alarm clock which reads the time of 3:25 which is an important aspect to the plot of the film. This clock appears in the flashback and also when jason wakes up, both reading the same time. This is the exact time that Kayleigh dies. Which shows the audience how its constantly haunting Jason. The repeativness of this clip makes the audience see that this is a key part of the film, it is the time when kayliegh died.

production company logos
For our opening sequence we have to create a production company which will appear at the beginning of the clip. we have researched into existing production company logos in order to receive inspiration in preparation for making our own logo.
Here is an example of a company logo named 'Red Letter Studios', the text in this logo shows a sense of tension due to dark colours. We will make our logo using dark colours as it portrays the genre of film we are making, and for the text to be distorted as our main character has a dark twisted past. The main character is also in a lot of danger, the colour red symbolises danger so this would be an appropriate colour to use in our logo.
Here is a second logo that we have researched. It is a company called 'Twisted Pictures'. This company produced all the saw films, it is associated with only horror films, which is one reason why it has inspired us for our own company logo. The font in this logo is eye catching, as there is a strong contrast between the colour of font and background. The text is in the middle of the screen highlighting its importance. The twisting feature gives a sense of being trapped, which gives the audience an idea of the genre of the film.
The universal logo is simple, yet effective. The company is one of the most successful in the 21st century, who target their films world wide- hence the image of planet earth, and its title 'Universal'. The title appears very bold, emphasising its world wide target audience. For our own production company logo, we will also create a bold title to entice the audience and give them a sense of what our film will be about.

The eery adjective 'Twined' creates a spooky feel relating to the horror genre. The title is effective and simple, holding a short 2 words making it more memorable.

Actors/actresses
Throughout our opening sequence, only 2 characters make an appearance - Kayleigh and Jason, who remain the main characters through the entire film. Our Actress that will play 'Kayleigh' the young girl in our opening sequence is our friend Tara Long (above). We feel that she will play a good role in our sequence as she has long hair which will drape over her face, and looks reasonably young. She is best suited to this role.
Our actor that will play 'Jason', the young caretaker (father of Kayleigh) is Fred Sturley, Lotties brother. He feel he is well suited to this role as he is at a suitable age and looks like a typical, up to date character.
Location shots
Here are some snap shots of our possible location of filming for our opening sequence. This location will hold the scene of Jason waking up from his series of flash backs, and at the end of his bed stands kayliegh. We think this may be a good shot for this certain part of our opening sequence. It is a normal bedroom with not much in it, as kayliegh will be at the end of the bed we want her to be the main focus of the scene so we think this location would be most effective.
Another location shot is held on the streets of our local area. We feel this might give our opening sequence a spooky atmosphere due to the dim red and black lighting. It is located next to a pitch black park and has no noise, this would be perfect for filming as no extra noise would effect our film. This location will hold the appearance of Kayleigh in the flashbacks

Target audience
The target audience for a film is one of the most important things that producers need to research as if the film is distributed to the wrong people e.g the wrong age group, the film wont be very successful and people wont watch it, meaning little profits will be made.

After conducting research, we found that the target audience of Horror films are both female and male starting at the age of 15/18 as teenagers are known for being daring and curious. Whether it is 15 or 18 rated depends on what content the film holds. This age range varies to around 25 years old- we feel that any people over this age may get a bit bored of the whole idea.

Synopsis
Awaken-
The beginning sequence of 'Awaken' begins with flashbacks of the character Jason Dallas, a young caretaker- the father of the little girl who plays a main role in this film, named Kayleigh. These flashbacks include fast cuts of the little girl, set in dark surroundings. The flashbacks then transport to past memories that these two characters held together including old photographs, along with ambient sounds of the girls laughter, where both Jason and Kayleigh appear content.
Directly after these memories are shown, a clock appears in this flashback reading 3:25 am. We then hear a loud ringing noise, which takes us to an extreme close up of character Jason waking up in a dark room, he appears startled and sits up quickly, breathing heavily. The character then looks up in despair at the clock, which also reads 3:25. The camera pans around the room that Jason is sat in, and returns to the character sitting up, clearly distraught with his hands clasping his head. We are then shocked by the reappearance of loud ringing, which ends with a flash. We are then transported to Jason's room, where we see the character of Kayleigh- a young girl, wearing a night dress, standing in the corner of this room staring into Jason's eyes. We hear a sudden whimper of the character Jason as the opening credits come to an end, the screen then fades to black.
The film then transports to a time before the disastrous event of Kayleigh's death that leaves all of the family in despair- when the characters seemed both happy and fearless, when no deep secrets were yet uncovered. We see the character of Jason dropping his daughter to school, then showing him returning home. In the next scene, Jason is shown drinking excessesive amounts of alcohol, smoking a cigarette, gazing at old photographs of his wife. This reveals to the audience that this character is suffering from alcoholism, in result of the death of his wife (Kayleighs mother). Jason and his wife Fleur had been lovers since the age of only 17, however his wife died due to the birth of kayleigh, which left Jason with an unintentional resentment towards his daughter.
Drunk and stumbling, Jason angrily picks up Kayleigh from school hours later than intended, she's left waiting outside the school building in the rain and it is now dark. With no sympathy he drags her into the car, reminiscing on past memories with his wife. He drives out of control under the influence of alcohol and an increasing sense of anger. whilst kayleigh is screaming for him to stop the car. Soon after the characters find themselves caught up in a devastating car accident- young Kayleigh found dead. This is when the film takes a haunting twist as Kayleigh's death punishes Jason in various ways. We see the character of Kayleigh's return to get revenge on her father, making his life hell.

We are then transported to Jason's room, where we see the character of Kayleigh- a young girl, wearing a night dress, standing in the corner of this room staring into Jason's eyes. We hear a sudden whimper of the character Jason as the opening credits come to an end, the screen then fades to black.
The film then transports to a time before the disastrous event of Kayleigh's death that leaves all of the family in despair- when the characters seemed both happy and fearless, when no deep secrets were yet uncovered. We see the character of Jason dropping his daughter to school, then showing him returning home. In the next scene, Jason is shown drinking excessesive amounts of alcohol, smoking a cigarette, gazing at old photographs of his wife. This reveals to the audience that this character is suffering from alcoholism, in result of the death of his wife (Kayleighs mother). Jason and his wife Fleur had been lovers since the age of only 17, however his wife died due to the birth of kayleigh, which left Jason with an unintentional resentment towards his daughter.
Drunk and stumbling, Jason angrily picks up Kayleigh from school hours later than intended, she's left waiting outside the school building in the rain and it is now dark. With no sympathy he drags her into the car, reminiscing on past memories with his wife. He drives out of control under the influence of alcohol and an increasing sense of anger. whilst kayleigh is screaming for him to stop the car. Soon after the characters find themselves caught up in a devastating car accident- young Kayleigh found dead. This is when the film takes a haunting twist as Kayleigh's death punishes Jason in various ways. We see the character of Kayleigh's return to get revenge on her father, making his life hell.

Storyboard
This is our hand drawn story board, it uses illustrations to narrate the structure and context of our opening sequence. We created this slideshow using Final Cut Pro, and added appropriate effects to some images which help to create a scary feel. This creation of our storyboard will help us to avoid unnecessary complications when filming our opening sequence. However, we will possibly divert from our storyboard in some ways, such as the camera angles and movements.
